Why this week
The problems this course solves
Greater Green River / Mesaverde teams still lose money when barrier–lagoon and fluvial architectures are mis-read as “stacked sands on structure.” Recent Almond and Ericson work shows compartmentalization, abrupt pinchouts, and facies-controlled deliverability that logs alone under-resolve. This week puts those failure modes on outcrop.
1 · Compartmentalization
Net-transgressive Almond barrier–lagoon sets create layered shoreface sands separated by bay-fill baffles, with shoreface pinchouts that can die in hundreds of meters — the Wamsutter / Vermillion-style “statistical play” problem.
2 · Wrong channel model
Distributaries and compound incised-valley fills look similar on a single well. Mis-ID drives the wrong continuity, trap, and completion story.
3 · Fluvial style vs A/S
Ericson sheet-like lowstands and multi-storey fills track accommodation / sediment-supply and tectonic unconformity (including Moxa-scale surfaces) — not a single “braided vs meandering” checkbox.
4 · Sparse-well prediction
Strike and dip facies shifts in coastal–shelf systems are hard to extrapolate from wells; outcrop calibrates scale, trajectory, and correlation risk.
5 · Structure is not enough
Tight-gas performance often follows facies, paleostructure, and diagenetic history more than the present-day anticline map.
Who asked for this
Devon’s May 2026 internal cohort came for reservoir presence, architecture scale, nearshore process, and oil-finder sequence stratigraphy — the same problem set public industry teams carry into Mesaverde and analog basins.

- carbon capture and storage (CCS) — Rock Springs Uplift has real CarbonSAFE / Madison–Weber–Nugget storage literature, but that is a different product story (deep saline under Jim Bridger). Do not pad the Mesaverde tight-gas field school with off-spine CCS.
- saltwater disposal (SWD) — Lean honesty: tight-gas water / completion-fluid asides fold into Engineering/Completions. Separate SWD geoscience fractions only if Lee adds a dedicated produced-water / injectivity module (then reconsider SWD 5 and rebalance Eng/Completions).

The Rock Springs Uplift exposes Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde through Almond coastal–fluvial systems — plus Blair deltaic–prodeltaic and MTC (mass-transport complex) / event-bed successions — at walkable scale for Greater Green River tight-gas analogs.
Method
Each field day opens with a short conceptual lecture, then six-hour outcrop work aimed at one prediction problem. Exclusive GFS drone models extend the same faces beyond the roadcut.
Five learning outcomes
- Outcome 1 — Discriminate distributary vs compound incised-valley-fill architectures and state the continuity / trap implication for the subsurface.
- Outcome 2 — Predict compartmentalization in net-transgressive barrier–lagoon systems (pinchouts, ravinement, bay-fill baffles, tidal inlet and washover complexity).
- Outcome 3 — Link tectonic unconformity and accommodation/sediment-supply (A/S) ratio — including Moxa-scale surfaces and Ericson members — to fluvial style (sheet-like lowstand vs multi-storey fills).
- Outcome 4 — Apply low- vs high-accommodation fluvial and shoreface end-members (Dakota–Muddy / Frontier) to correlation risk and reservoir prediction.
