Submarine canyons and deepwater channels are the primary conduits for the transfer of reservoir grade sediments from the shelf to the basin. Muddy sediments are commonly associated with levees on the upper slope. Sand rich facies are associated with channel fills and lobes associated with deepwater fans; these are primary exploration targets. The evolution of southern California included many episodes of deepwater sedimentation in settings ranging from a Paleozoic cratonic passive margin to Mesozoic forearc and arc settings to Cenozoic transform, pull-apart, and continental borderland basins. This course will examine, in outcrop, six deepwater systems in which large and small submarine channels and lobes are the primary sites of reservoir grade sand deposition.
